Free Government Skill Training for Workers in Maharashtra — Complete Guide

Did you know the government will pay for your trade training, give you a recognized certificate, and sometimes even pay you a stipend during the course? Most workers don't know this exists. Maharashtra has several active skill development schemes that provide free or heavily subsidized training in dozens of trades — from electrician to tailoring to mobile repair.

1. PM Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY)

PMKVY is the central government's flagship free skill training program, running since 2015. The current version, PMKVY 4.0, provides short-term training (weeks to a few months) in over 300 sector-specific trades. Training is completely free — the government pays the training partner directly. After completion, you receive a nationally recognized certificate from NSDC (National Skill Development Corporation). Trades available include electrician, plumber, solar technician, driver training, mobile repair, retail sales, healthcare, construction work, and many more.

2. PM Vishwakarma Scheme

Launched in 2023, PM Vishwakarma targets traditional artisans and craftspeople — carpenters, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, potters, cobblers, masons, and similar trades. The scheme provides free training, a toolkit worth ₹15,000, and access to collateral-free loans up to ₹3 lakh at reduced interest. If you work in any traditional craft or trade, this scheme is specifically designed for you. Maharashtra hosted a major PM Vishwakarma program in Wardha, showing the state government's active push to enroll eligible workers.

3. Maharashtra Mahaswayam Portal

The state government runs the Mahaswayam portal (kaushalya.mahaswayam.gov.in), which brings together skill training, employment, and self-employment under one platform. Through Mahaswayam, you can find training centers near you, enroll in state-funded courses, and connect with employers after training. Its a good starting point if you want to see what's available in your district before choosing a program.

4. Mukhyamantri Maha-Aarogya Kaushlya Vikas Program

This Maharashtra-specific scheme provides free skill training for paramedical and healthcare support roles — ward boy, nursing assistant, medical lab technician, and similar positions. Training happens at government medical colleges and hospitals across the state. After training, candidates are connected to hospital job opportunities. If you're near any government hospital in Sangli, Kolhapur, or Pune, check if this program has available seats.
